When Ben first arrived at OFI's Care Center, he was too afraid to explore the forest on his own. Instead, he cuddled up in a caregiver’s lap where he felt safe. As is common with most of our young orphaned orangutans, this was typical behavior. But as he has grown, over time he has gained confidence and sought more independence!

Generally, orangutan reactions to rain are similar to humans, in that they prefer to stay dry! Wild orangutan Mooch finds some shelter for her and her daughter, Molly as the rain at Camp Leakey pours down endlessly.

After an orangutan is released back to the wild, OFI staff monitor their progress & provide supplemental feeding everyday. This way, we can ensure a smooth & safe transition from the Care Center to full-time, independent jungle living!

Staghorn ferns are beautifully unique flora found throughout Borneo & Southeast Asia. Like the orangutans, staghorn ferns also rely on trees of the primitive forests to survive. We need to protect the rainforest to preserve biodiversity.

Male orangutans Ogel & Rangda enjoying each other's company! Orangutans are considered to be a semi-solitary species, but they can still form bonds with one another as subadults. Thor is a male orangutan born in the wild🌳. His mother, Tut, is one of the many orphans raised by OFI years ago, after her own mother was killed by poachers. They now all live free in and around the forest of Tanjung Puting.

The Borneo skink is a lizard endemic to Borneo. They can be spotted throughout the island's primary and secondary forests. This reptile forages around tree trunks for insects and is quite likely to pay you visit if you linger in the forest!🦎

The sun sets on another day in Tanjung Puting National Park. Wonderous species such as kingfishers, proboscis monkeys, and wild orangutans retreat to the trees for the night.

Edible items are supplemental natural foods given to in addition to their regular diet. One of these tasty treats distributed by OFI's Enrichment Team is sugarcane. Male juvenile Ben clearly can't get enough!
