Belgian Cheese Pairing part two! 🇧🇪 🧀 . So the second half of the 6 Belgian cheeses were equally enjoyable. Our two schedules during his 5 day stay in Philadelphia made it difficult to get tastings done on a daily basis. So, we invited Tenaya Darlington, aka @mmefromage to come over and sample some that we had already enjoyed, along with the remaining bunch. It was even more fun ! . . Sam worried that the trip damaged them aesthetically, but when I opened these wheels up and they looked great! I do plan to paint one of these good candidates. . The first translates to "little flower" and Sam explained that he researched and chose all pairings to Mach as best as possible - it was so much appreciated ❤️ . Pairing : "Keiems Bloempje" a soft, bloomy rinded camembert styled wheel, paired with "Grosse Bertha" a hefeweizen styled Belgian wheat beer that's fruity and crisp, malt flavored from the Brussels influenced part of Belgian. Pairing "Kaasterkaas" a semi soft cows milk round with a natural washed rind. This was paired with "Vicaris Tripel" a "cloudy" whit beer with yeasty, spices, fruits and flower notes. This is one that the cheese made the beer taste better. Pairing : "Old Groendal" a farmstead "Belgian Gouda" that is aged least 18 months with a classic sweet, caramel, pineapple with crunchy crystals and yet very creamy. It was paired nicely with "Kamil", a golden clean wheat ale made with local Belgian hops. . . 🖤💛❤️ thanks @jupinjunior ! .

Belgian Pairing (part 1) 🇧🇪🧀❤️ This week I had a friend from visit for 5 days. He asked if I like Belgian beer and chocolate and I answered I’d be fine with a hunk of Belgian cheese. Sam arrived with a well researched collection of 6 cheeses,5 beers, chocolate and bread! 😍 . . Here's the first part of our pairing: We started with a delicious and mild blue cheese that I mentioned looked very familiar (I seem to be obsessed with the various veins of blue, on a visual level) and when I researched a bit, I found I had already painted it! This was incredible with a beautiful sour cherry beer. . The next day a Crottin with fig in the middle, why haven't I seen this in the states??? it went well with the 2nd sour beer. Then in the morning, we had a stinky breakfast with the "Herve Kaas" which was super strong smelling, tangy orange washed rind and I was hesitant about it being my breakfast. Sam assured me that his research promised it was most perfectly paired with strong coffee (the only kind I know how to make). and on this seedy rye bread smeared with ; it was AMAZING! . Pairing : "Achelse Blauwe" (aka Grevenbroecker, which I painted a couple years ago!) with a "Oud Beersel Oude Kriek" with an immense flavour of fresh cherries! Pairing : "Mathilde" a goat round, Crottin, with a tiny layer of fig paste in its center. Served with a traditional "Oude Geuze" a blend of lambic from different years, bottle fermented and slight hints of fruity and happiness. Pairing : "Herve Kaas" a stinky, pungent washed rind square that reminds me of Limburger. This special cheese was paired with coffee! ...and , it was served on wonderful dense seedy rye bread that was smeared with some pear syrup "Du Vrai Sirop de liege" a dense, reduced syrup that is as as jam and slightly sweet and perfectly sets off the pairing of strong cheese and coffee. . .

My says it’s Pablo Solanet’s birthday! Pablo’s one of the makers and owners at @fireflycheese in and they make some incredible 😍🧀❤️ . So, thought I’d revisit my only firefly I have left, the absolutely indulgent “Merry Goat Round, Spruce Reserve”. If you get a chance to celebrate Father’s Day today in cheese, I suggest this one ☝️ . Happy Birthday Pablo! 🎉 .

“Rouge Wheel” 8x8” oil on wood, and available for adoption 💛 . . Loved getting obsessed with the brainy rind of “La Bonne Vie Rouge” made for @gfifoods by a very good in . Technically I’ve only painted one cheese makers from that state 😉. . I’m happy to report though that this French-style blooms rind wheel has increased sales since my other 🧀🎨 painting of it was put onto the cover of the Gourmet Foods International 2019 catalog. Yay to ! .

It’s a special honor when a pickle queen owns your pickle painting 💚🥒🎨🥰 @phicklefoods with @get_repost ・・・ This is a belated post about the most excellent birthday gift a fermenter could ask for! A @mikegenostudio original! 🥒🥒🥒 I’ve loved Mike’s work forever and have several of his cheese prints hanging in my house. This is the first actual painting of his I’ve owned and it’s glorious. I love how incredibly sculptural his work is. Like, even irl, those cuke seeds are 3-dimensional and look real! Thanks for the thoughtful gift, dear @jakeolad! Thanks for always making extraordinary art @mikegenostudio!

“Purple Rain Donut” 💜☔️🍩🎨 . I fell in with this donut way back when it was first produced by @federaldonuts , to honor Prince shortly after his death. I was kicking myself for not getting my hands onto one of these purple sparkly vanilla lavender jewels. . Then they brought it back (!) yesterday, on June 7th, Prince’s birthday. 💜. . Well I was determined not to miss my 2nd chance; i picked up a few on my way to the studio and after inhaling the first one , I got working on that purple goodness while my iPod on shuffle seemed to eerily play Prince songs ten times more often than usual 👀💜👻 . Kudos to Chef Matt Fein for all his aesthetic achievements; his fancy donut line is pure food . Like all of their donuts this one is incredibly delicious. . Original oil painting is 12x12” on panel and available at mikegeno.com 🎨 . . . donutary

It’s ! And Prince’s birthday 💜 and my favorite donut makers @federaldonuts brought back the “Purple Rain” 🍩❣️ . It was slamming at the shop I stopped by today and they were giving out stickers with purchases, to promote pride in donut-ing, yeah, it’s a verb now. Might try and not eat all these right away, and paint some love. ☔️💥 . . 💜 #🍩🎨

“Finger Lakes Gold” 11x14” oil on wood, available for sale and EXTREMELY delicious. Pete Messmer and his dad from @livelyrundairy stopped by the studio and dropped of a chunk of this delicious goat cheese that reminds me of a great goat Gouda or Manchego. . It was fun setting up a thin slice to get some goin. Though, it’s so hot in my studio, this fainted as I was almost finished : fell over all sweaty. I simply ate it. There’s no evidence of that incident

New available on my site. 🎨 🍣 🖼 🐟 🍽 Happy to have a new home for the “Tuna Sahimi” I picked up at nearby @hikariphilly , a rarity in the series when I found a sushi restaurant that offered enthusiasm for my idea of painting their sushi. The chef made a few suggestions and I loved this one. His fresh tuna “flower” was a really fun challenge of color; everything described in a gamut of reds and oranges. .

Forgot I made this progress clip...🧀 🎵 🔈🤷🏻‍♂️. As you can see, the “Cayuga Blue” only took a couple seconds to paint. . @livelyrundairy goat blue love 💙🎨. . . And happy 🧀 ! . .
