Artist Lauren Godfrey (@laurengodders) has been working with the DLWP’s Young Creatives today to add a flick of colour to her upcoming exhibition! . Lauren invited the Young Creatives and FourSeasons to flick-paint the benches that will be used in her exhibition, Group Hat. The bench will be a part of a malleable space of tables, walls and rooms designed to be moved and changed to meet the needs of a varied programme of workshops. Lauren hopes the space created by Group Hat will be a playground for learning, unlearning and play for all. . Group Hat opens 15 June alongside our Summer exhibition, How Chicago! Imagists 1960s & 70s. Follow our socials to see how you can get involved in the upcoming workshops. . Young Creatives is a programme for 14-21 year olds interested in culture and the creative industries. Visit our website, linked in our bio, if you would like to get involved in their projects. . A historic moment for Bexhill today! A replica portrait of Kate Marsden, one of the original founders of Bexhill Museum, will now hang in the museum for the first time ever. Kate Marsden, an explorer and missionary, was victim of a smear campaign against her name regarding her ‘immorality with women’. Rumours became myth and fable and her name was struck off by the Museum over 100 years ago. The portrait is part of Carl Gent’s ‘In Praise Of Scratching, 2019, a sculpture included in our Spring exhibition, Still I Rise: Feminisms, Gender, Resistance, Act 2. Carl describes the portrait’s move to the museum as ‘Institutional justice on a Bexhillian scale’. Our Ground floor gallery is currently closed as we prepare for our next exhibition, How Chicago! Imagists 1960s & 70s. Find out more on our website, linked in our bio.

As popular as it has been poignant, Water Cooler Wisdom: If Only These Jug Heads Could Talk has been the focus of many quiet moments of astonishment for visitors of Still I Rise: Feminisms, Gender, Resistance, Act 2. . The work invites visitors to share their experiences of sexism and add it to the noticeboard. Since the exhibitions opening in February, over 100 instances of discrimination have been posted. . Water Cooler Wisdom was originally created in 1993 by CARYATIDS (Chicks in Architecture Refuse to Yield to atavistic Thinking in Design and Society), a collaboration between Carol Crandall, Kay Janis and Sally Levine: . ‘We collected comments that were made to women at the office, in the studio, or in school – all within the five years previous to the exhibit. it was unbelievable – every woman we spoke to had at least one story. These are the kinds of comments that usually aren’t quite grounds for filing a harassment suit but make life at work or at school constantly uncomfortable’ – Sally Levine, 1993 . Presented so we don’t forget what we’ve seen, here is a selection of the posts made to the board during its time in Still I Rise. For the full set of images, more information on the work and the full credit, see our blog on dlwp.com/a-final-act-of-resistance/ With thanks to Chris Parker for recreating the work.
