More than 400 million pieces of plastic — including about 370,000 toothbrushes and a million shoes — have washed ashore on the remote Cocos (Keeling) Islands in the Indian Ocean, according to new research. The 27 islands, home to about 500 people, are often marketed to tourists as an unspoiled paradise. "Islands such as these are like canaries in a coal mine, and it's increasingly urgent that we act on the warnings they are giving us," said marine scientist Jennifer Lavers, who led the study.

Imagine skipping all the traffic and flying to your destination 🚕🛩That's what one German start-up is hoping to unveil. Here's an electric flying air prototype that could get you to - and from - your destination mid-air. Even better? You can book it through an app. The company, Lilium, didn't reveal how much the service would cost but claims that it will be "comparable in price" with regular taxis. The company faces stiff competition with other big names investing in flying cars — including Uber, Boeing and Rolls Royce. (🎥: Lilium)

Electric cars make up only a tiny fraction of the automobiles sold worldwide, but by 2040 they could make up 57% of all passenger car sales 🚗🔌 according to an analysis by Bloomberg New Energy Finance. Electric cars are coming close to matching gasoline- and diesel-powered cars in purchase price and they already cost less to operate. That means that electric cars will soon overtake internal combustion-powered cars as the more economical choice for consumers 🌿 For more, follow @cnnbusiness.

“I will be damned if the same politicians who refused to act then are going to try to come back today and say we need a middle-of-the-road approach to save our lives,” Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez said at a rally Monday, taking aim at Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden. The former vice president, who has been under fire from some progressives over his stance on climate change, responded Tuesday: “I've never been 'middle of the road' on the environment … take a look at the record.”

The concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere has risen to over 415 parts per million — far higher than at any point in the last 800,000 years, since before the evolution of humans. Meteorologist Eric Holthaus spotted the new high when it was tweeted out by the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, which measures daily CO2 rates at the Mauna Loa Observatory in Hawaii. “We don’t know a planet like this,” Holthaus said on Twitter. New research suggests that climate change is helping spread a fungus that attacks bananas. Black sigatoka, commonly known as "black leaf streak," can reduce the fruit produced by infected plants by up to 80%, according to a new study. Infection risk has increased about 44% on average across banana-growing areas of Latin America and the Caribbean since the 1960s through the current decade, the study found. This was due to greater wetness plus altered temperature conditions favorable to the pathogen.
