Hi everyone! Good news today that we'd love your help spreading: @obamafoundation just announced the very first class of Obama Fellows. They're 20 amazing people from 11 different countries who are already civic innovators in their communities, from growing voter turnout in Mali to building community-based approaches to the opioid crisis. Over the next two years, they’ll work with the foundation and collaborate with each other to expand and scale their work. You can congratulate them with the hashtag #ObamaFellows, or share the announcement with this link: Obama.org/Fellowship Thanks so much and have a blessed week! @barackobama @michelleobama
THE WINDMILL CONCEPT IN ACTION. I usually say, "the Highest form of payment you can ever give me is your testimony." I love it when more people make it. Anyone from Malawi will agree with me that making K3,500 ($5) / day in your sleep is something. MAY WE HAVE MORE YOUNG PEOPLE RISE UP TO FINANCIAL FREEDOM. We are here to help. #DayJobVsNightJob #TeamMaestros
WHY WE DO WHAT WE DO. (Part 1 - My primary school days & Mama's faith-filled words) Like most people I know, I was born in a "poor country," with limited resources in our home to go by. I remember my first primary school, Likwenu, was in a village and here is part of my experience. ***I had to walk Kilometres across scary bridges and mountains with snakes and monkeys just to learn. ***We had to sit on stones/ dirt under a tree because that was our "classroom". When it rained, there were no classes. ***We had no books, no pencils or boards, we had to write on the ground with our fingers or sticks. BUT MAMA TAUGHT US TO DREAM BIG, She kept telling us that "GOD IS ABLE." FAITHFUL-FILLED WORDS FROM MAMA One auspicious day, at the age of 6, there was an airplane flying by our house, and you know as kids we could always try to run after it. In that same state of struggle, my mother saw my excitement and told me words that raised my dreams flying high, she said, "My son, keep looking up in the sky, can you see how high that airplane is? Now If a man can take that heavy thing up there, be sure that OUR GOD can take you higher. If you really want fly by airplane, then you will fly around the world and get tired of it,." Interestingly enough, I CHOSE TO BELIEVE my mother's words. MAY OUR BACKGROUNDS BE OUR MOTIVATION TO DO BETTER. When we launched Maestros Leadership Team, and started making money, the first projects had to be on education; 1000 scholarship grants, school materials and 1000 uniforms in primary schools, because we know how the struggle is. I believe that if we dwell on our challenges, we will not forge forward, it is time to use our poor and tough backgrounds as a means of motivation to strive for greatness and help others grow their potentials to compete on the national or global stage. LIFE IS A JOURNEY, DON'T GIVE UP, DON'T GIVE IN. AMEN. #TeamMaestros

(Part 3) DEVELOPING HIGH-INCOME SKILL VS HIGH INCOME JOB. Just like the common “wedding day VS marriage” mistake; I made the mistake of looking forward to the day I was to wear my graduation gown more than I ever was for days after. It is sad to see the youth unemployment rates rising every year in Africa, to a point where we have college graduates standing by the roads with “HELP: I NEED A JOB” placards. BUT IS IT REALLY EMPLOYMENT OUR GENERATION NEEDS? Today I will talk about “Formal education,” as it is customarily the major pre-requisite in a High-income Job while Formal and even informal skill development training is the major criterion in a high-income skill. That being said, both are key but most of our upbringing has led us to believe that, getting “the right degree” from “the right institution” can seem like the most important thing in the world. THE MISCONCEPTION OF FORMAL EDUCATION The formal education system rendered in most countries has not been upgraded since the industrial era. That is why many can argue that the education they received did not empower them to create, manage, as it was "initially designed to have people employed, mainly in manufacturing factories." Observe why we have: 01. One-fits-all Curriculum as almost everyone was to have a singular goal, work in a factory. 02. To pass exams we have to do more of memorization than to reason/ think creatively as most factory workers were not required to reason but follow instructions. 03. Taught to wear uniforms and sit/ walk in straight lines, just as factory workers. 21ST CENTURY SKILL DEVELOPMENT FOR THE GOOGLE GENERATION Our generation must understand that skill development is no longer limited to 4 corners of formal education. I will share with you what I learnt from Naval Ravikant, the co-founder of AngelList, 1. What to study and how to study it are more important than where to study it and for how long. 2. The best and readily available teachers are on the Internet. Readily available great books are on the Internet. Some of most informed peers are on the Internet. 3. The tools for learning are abundant. It's the desire to learn that's scarce. #TeamMaestros
MY 5 KEY FACTORS ON BUILDING & BECOMING A BRAND (Introductory class 101) *** How did I start working with different governments, presidents and ambassadors? *** How did I find myself on the Obama Foundation cards & stickers? *** How did I, by the age of 26 help build @maestros_leadership to grow across Africa and be among top 3 global organizations awarded by the United Nations? If you’re not branding yourself, you can be sure others will do it for you and it may not be pretty. Your brand gives weight to your presence and your association alone can easily generate you income. 2Pac Shakur (the brand) made $75 million of sales after his death. Dr. Dre sold “Beats by Dre” trademark to Apple for $3.2 Billion. This is the power of branding. THE POWER OF BRANDING I am targeting people ambitious enough to see beyond their time here on earth, to build something beyond their surrounding localities. Today, I will just briefly share my major 5 factors that helped me. Later on, we will be going through each subtopic in detail. MENTION ONE OF THE 5 AREAS YOU BELIEVE WILL HELP YOU THE MOST AND WHY. 1. DEFINING YOUR BRAND 2. BECOMING A MAESTRO [EXPERT] IN YOUR INDUSTRY. 3. BECOMING A CONSISTENTLY RELIABLE & GOOD QUALITY SOURCE. 4. GENERATING BRAND AWARENESS THROUGH MEDIA COVERAGE 5. GENERATING BRAND AWARENESS THROUGH NETWORKING. All the best. LET’S DO THIS #TeamMaestros
TODAY'S TIP: HOW TO PROFESSIONALLY CONTACT ANYONE. One important thing I learnt early in my career is that attitude is a little thing that makes a big difference. People may hear your words, see your texts, but they feel your attitude. In November 2017 I was in Chicago for a meeting with President Barack Obama, Michelle Obama, Aliko Dangote, Prince Harry, Tony Elumelu, Dr Strive Masiyiwa, Common and other great icons working on shaping the Obama Foundation, and that room was a goldmine of great networking opportunities, but the attitude of approach mattered. LESSON: When calling/ texting/ emailing a high-level figure or anyone especially for the first time or someone who might not have your contact details please formally introduce yourself, it doesn't hurt. PLEASE don't use short-hand/ emoji's or just say "Hi" or "Hello" and wait for them to respond. IT’S ANNOYING. HERE IS AN EXAMPLE FOR TODAY’S TIP: "Good morning sir/ma'am, this is _______ (Full name), the _____ (title/ position) of ______ (organization/ institution) from __________ (location/ country). On ______ (date/ day) we ________ (activity both of you engaged in/ what they did) at _________ (location/ event). I am writing you to _________ (Introduce the purpose of your writing. You may share a link/ document or two to give further illustration of your point). I appreciate ________ (acknowledge/ give gratitude to what they do/ did) and I am looking forward to __________. (Specify what you are looking forward to and the means of communication if necessary). Best Regards." NOTE: If you have not engaged with them before, just let them know how you came about to get their contact details and at this stage avoid asking for personal information such as place of residence/ age/ family etc. In this way, ANYONE will be more considerably engaging and will probably reciprocate with that same level of respect, let them make it into an informal conversation if they want to, but don't assume they are ok with small talk. ALL THE BEST. #TeamMaestros
MONEY IS ALL ABOUT LEVELS!!! WHICH LEVEL ARE YOU ON? Apart from other influencing factors such as policies and generosity of the employer, here are my 5 major KEY LEVELS that determine how much you get paid anywhere. GET TO KNOW THEM & let's help each other plan on how to upgrade yourself. 01. LABOUR - This is the lowest level and does not require special training. It can be argued as the most painful stage, where you get paid for the calculated manual work that you put in. For instance, carry twenty of 50 Kg bags of cement and you will get paid 50 cents/ bag. 02. EDUCATION / TRAINING - This is a stage where most people look forward to. At this stage, your wages are usually determined by your qualifications not necessarily the labour that you put in. For instance, the same field/ course/ position, where one with a college degree will earn more than one with a diploma even though the one with a diploma might have more "experience." 03. EXPERIENCE - I personally encourage viewing experience as a collective evidential exposure rather than time spent as it is mostly the case. Such that when you add #2 (Education and training) with your experience, you get leverage. For instance, one that has worked in an international organisation or has worked on a new technological system might get a LEG UP even in wages. 04. VALUE - You are more likely to get higher wages if you bring in (high paying) clients, or build an innovative system that might save the company time & money. 05. BRAND - Here your payment is determined by the name/ image you have built over time which creates a demand in the market. This is easily evident in sports, music/ film industry, where one gets paid $5 million per movie not because of the manual work/ education but the demand for their image. When you reach this level, your very presence/ association with a company can easily generate you income. BRINGING IT ALL TOGETHER: BECOME MARKETABLE THROUGH ACCOUNTABILITY & PERSONALITY. Your skills, years of experience, professional degrees alone won’t make you exceptional/ Marketable, you need a good/ relatable personality in this world. #TeamMaestros #DayJobVsNightJob
(Part 2) DEVELOPING HIGH-INCOME SKILL VS HIGH-INCOME JOB HOW MUCH ARE THEY PAYING YOU TO GIVE UP ON YOUR DREAMS. We have already established how employers determine wages in a HIGH-INCOME JOB, which is not the case regarding high-income skills, as wages are determined by the market/ demand created. I developed my architectural skills to liberate me to work anywhere across the globe and used my speaking, motivational & consultation skills deliberately to create a demand around the world for me to be paid for my advice & presentations. "... YOU CAN ALSO HAVE ONE JOB BUT MANY HIGH-INCOME SKILLS." TIME AND SPACE In today's lesson: you have to understand that even in the settings of a high-income job, you usually have a set framework of time (usually 08:00am-5:00pm) and space of operation which might limit you when it's in comparison to having a high-income skill. As in this latter case, you can dictate the terms of space and time. In some cases, A client can reach out to you, give you a contract, and you can work on it on your "Day Job off-working hours" or even submit your work via email at anytime anywhere. Convenient Right !!! WE SPEND SO MUCH TIME FUELING OTHER PEOPLE'S DREAMS & PROJECTS. Sadly most of us think we spend 1/3 of a day (8 hours/ day) on our day jobs, but in real essence, on average we spend, a minimum of 12 hours (1/2 of a day): trying to get to and from work, having necessary and unnecessary breaks, thinking we are cheating the employer, after work calls and meetings and office working hours just to top it up. Thus in a day, we spend at least 12 hours a day working on building someone's dreams and get home, too tired to work on building our own. It time you work on developing a high-income skill. HOW MUCH ARE THEY PAYING YOU TO GIVE UP ON YOUR DREAMS, HUH? Some people here know 1. How to Design a Website 2. How to prepare a concept note/ business or project proposal 3. How to Manage Projects and People 4. How to organize & manage events 5. How to manage and market social media platforms 6. How to translate and fluently speak in 3-5 languages 7. Strategic Marketing and other skills that can help them earn income today.
