If you find a red and brown bird at your feeder in the winter, it could be a House Finch...or a Purple Finch. Purple Finches nest in Canada, the Northeast, and along the Pacific. In the winter, they migrate as far south as Florida. The male Purple Finch's Raspberry-red plumage and bulky body separates it from the House Finch. ⠀ ⠀ Purple Finch. Loggerhead Shrikes are year round residents in southern states, but their winter range can overlap with the Northern Shrike. About an inch smaller than the Northern Shrike, Loggerhead Shrikes have an all black mask spreading past their eyes and a small black beak. ⠀ ⠀ Loggerhead Shrike. Did you know Canada Geese and Cackling Geese were considered the same species until 2004? Canada Geese can be found the lower 48 year round and their deep “honks” clearly sepereate them from other waterfowl. ⠀ ⠀ Canada Goose. Photo: Mark Williams/Audubon Photography Awards⠀ ⠀

If you come across a field of Canada Geese, there may be a few Cackling Geese in the gaggle. Much smaller than the Canada Goose, the Cackling Goose is only found south of Canada during winter months and can be distinguished by its high pitched cackling, yips, and squeaks. ⠀ ⠀ Cackling Goose (left).
