The ordeal faced by these Jamaican fishermen is part of a well-documented practice by the Coast Guard in carrying out “the War on Drugs.” Thousands of men have been taken from their boats and held for weeks or months. For many, like our clients, no drugs were ever found.
We filed suit last week against the Coast Guard for detaining four Jamaican fishermen in secret for over a month, exposing them to a hurricane and denying them access to shelter, basic sanitation, proper food, and medical care.
After a year away from their families, these fishermen returned home from their unlawful and abusive detention by the Coast Guard financially ruined. They also continue to suffer the effects of intense trauma to this day.
We filed a lawsuit to get justice for Jamaican men who were kidnapped and abused by the U.S. Coast Guard for over a month. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The men still suffer from physical and psychological trauma as a result of their treatment.
As they stood chained to the deck of a Coast Guard ship, four Jamiacan fishermen watched officers set fire to their boat and riddle it with bullets. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ It was the beginning of a cruel, 32-day detention on four different Coast Guard ships.
