On my run today, stunning views in the sunshine across The Skern, numerous seabirds, Starlings creating breathtaking murmuration shapes....and a PLASTIC BAG, in the flowering gorse bush. I took it to the bin. Everyone else out for walks passing it there ignored it...I’m baffled. Plastic bags in the oceans everyone knows by now it’s a bad bad thing 🤷‍♀️ sstrategy

FOLLOW UP >> @karlsson.t.m . . . . . . . ‘Reading the European commission’s plastics strategy is quite exciting. In the communication its good to see how so much of the complexity within the issue that is integrated and how the importance of redesign and working closer to the roots of the problem is emphasized in different ways. It’s also great that they work so much with improving waste management, which is definitely a key issue here. I’m also happy to see that they recognize the importance of replacing and phasing out substances that hamper recycling processes. But throughout the read it seemed that a lot of the focus was on recycling initiatives. To visualize it I did a wordcloud of the document (https://www.wordclouds.com/) and then I looked at relative use of the different RRRs (you remember? Reduce, Reuse, Recycle) Reuse is used 7 times, although there are some other hints in that direction Reduce was used twice that amount, so 14 times. But only one time in the context of reducing plastic consumption “Additional measures at EU and national levels can be developed to reduce the unnecessary generation of plastic waste,” The other times it related to reduced litter (x9), reduced fossil fuel dependency (x2), reduced food waste and reduced costs. Recycle on the other hand was used 52 times. Look, it is great that there is such a strong will to improve recycling of plastics. It is a very important step in the right direction. But let’s remember that we also need to reduce our plastic usage and reuse as much as possible.’ . . . . . . . . . . . . . #plasticsstrategy

The EU's #PlasticsStrategy was launched 2 weeks ago and today we spotted @SkyOceanRescue's 10-metre whale in Westminster! 🐳The whale is made of 250 kgs of plastic, which is the same amount that pollutes the ocean every second. 😢
