Light of the Firefly • • Fireflies or hotaru (the Japanese translation) have been a metaphor for passionate love. During summer months you can see their lights dancing in the evening glow. • • The Center for Biological Diversity and the Xerces Society for Invertebrate Conservation filed an emergency petition seeking Endangered Species Act protection for the critically imperiled Bethany Beach firefly. • • “Without immediate protections, the magical green flashes known to generations of children will be snuffed out forever,” says Dr. Tara Cornelisse, an entomologist who is a senior scientist at the Center. “We can’t stand by and let development, climate change and pesticides wipe out these amazing creatures, along with their wetland homes that many species depend on.” • • The Bethany Beach firefly has been pushed to the brink of extinction by urbanization, light pollution, habitat fragmentation, pesticides and climate change-induced sea-level rise and storm surges. • • The world’s estimated 2,000 species of fireflies are dwindling. They live on every continent except Antarctica. But just as in Delaware, many of their populations are threatened around the world. We can do better. • • 📷 + 🗣 Nori Yuasa @nori.yuasa ReGram: @natgeoyourshot National Geographic — With files from The Xerces Society, The Center for Biological Diversity, ‪Grist.org‬, National Geographic and IUCN (*International Union for Conservation of Nature) 🔹Follow Nori Yuasa’s feed for more mesmerizing images at—> @nori.yuasa • • #globalassessment

Family Photo Time • • National Geographic Your Shot photographer, Trang Nguyen captured this image of a family of red-shanked douc who paused for a moment to pose for his camera. • • “The red-shanked douc is a species of Old World monkey, among the most colourful of all primates,” says Nguyen. “They live on the Son Tra Peninsula, Danang, Vietnam.” • • “They have become the symbol of Danang city, although there are some concerns that recent development of resorts will endanger the habitat of the red-shanked douc,” adds Nguyen. • • “Scientists have proposed to add red shanked douc into the list of critically endangered species for stricter protection.” • • 📷 + 🗣 Trang Nguyen @zekedrone ReGram: @natgeoyourshot National Geographic — With files from National Geographic and IUCN (*International Union for Conservation of Nature) • • #globalassessment
