Stephen Kolzak (February 19, 1953 - September 19, 1990), pictured on the right with actor Michael Mitz, who was best known for casting TV series Cheers, died of AIDS in Sherman Oaks Community Hospital at the age of 37. . Kolzak’s companion, writer Paul Monette, also later died of AIDS on February 10, 1995. . Kolzak, a native of Hartford, graduated from @Harvard and had been senior vice president of casting and talent at @columbiapictures Television until his illness forced him to quit in 1987. He then became an AIDS awareness activist in Hollywood. . In October 1987, Kolzak was arrested at the U.S. Supreme Court building during a march for LGBT rights. A year later, he was again arrested at the Food and Drug Administration during a demonstration protesting government drug policy . In 1984, Kolzak received the Artios Award from the Casting Society of America for his work on Cheers. . During his career, Kolzak supervised casting for tv shows including Starsky and Hutch, Silver Spoons, The Jeffersons and Who's the Boss. . Kolzak later worked with Hollywood studios to develop plans for dealing with AIDS in the workplace and was featured in a TV Guide cover story on AIDS in the television industry. . The @glaad Stephen F. Kolzak Award is a special Media Award presented annually to an openly LGBTQ member of the entertainment or media community for his or her work toward eliminating homophobia. . It has been awarded since 1991, with Kolzak being the posthumous inaugural recipient.
