GROW MANGOES FROM SEED Variety. The best mango to use in this case is a polyembrionic variety, which means that like mine, it has a few seeds, so will grow many shoots that are true to type. (Identical to the patent plant) The most common polyembrionic mango in Australian shops is Kensington Pride. But for best results, ideally you'll know the tree your fruit came from so you'll know what the flavour and the tree will be like. STEP 1 The first step in germinating a mango seed is to dry the pip out so you can crack it open. The best way to do that is to pop it out in the sun for a couple of hours and just let whatever bugs eat the flesh as they're helping to clean it up for you. STEP 2 Now that your seed is dry, it's far less slippery and easy to hold. But you still might want to hold it in a tea towel as you crack it open to protect your hand if the knife slips. (A when I was shucking oysters and stabbed myself. 🙄 ) When your pip is dry, you'll notice that it has a fluffy edge and a smoothe edge. Take a blunt knife to the smooth edge and find the ridge to use as a kind of lever. Wriggle the knife into the ridge very gently as the seeds are right there behind the edge. Then twist the knife to prise the pip open. STEP 3 You should find a collection of white seeds like the second photo, attached by a small umbilical cord. Gently pull the seeds away from the pip. STEP 4 It's best not to separate them, instead put the entire thing into a pot of seed raising mixture and water daily.(pic 3) In just over a week you'll see the first shoots of your mango trees come to life. STEP 5 When they have more than 4 leaves, thin them out and pot them up to watch them grow. Happy Digging! 😊 ✌ 💚 🌱   sofinstagram
