#FunFactFriday one day late! We’ll be starting to do fun facts every Friday about the obscure historical events that you don’t hear about every day! • Today’s topic is The Winchester Mystery House. We all have seen the trailers and poster for the new movie coming out, but it’s actually based on a true story! Sarah Winchester (Picture 3) was told by a clairvoyant that the spirits of those killed with Winchester rifles took the lives of her daughter and husband (William Wirt Winchester) would soon come after her, too. The clairvoyant advises her that in order to prevent this, she must keep building onto her house. She had workmen renovating and building on her property 24/7 for the years leading up to Sarah’s death in 1922. The house is 24,000 sq ft, and has windows, doors, and secret rooms everywhere! In Picture 5 is a staircase that leads directly to the ceiling, and Picture 6 shows a door on the second story level that leads directly outside! If you ever have the opportunity to travel to San Jose, CA, check out this amazing landmark!

The color purple has been associated with royalty, power and wealth for centuries. In fact, Queen Elizabeth I forbid anyone except close members of the royal family to wear it. Purple's elite status stems from the rarity and cost of the dye originally used to produce it. Purple fabric used to be so outrageously expensive that only rulers could afford it. The dye initially used to make purple came from the Phoenician trading city of Tyre, which is now in modern-day Lebanon. Fabric traders obtained the dye from a small mollusk that was only found in the Tyre region of the Mediterranean Sea. #funfactfriday
