City of Utqiagvik

At this point in my life, I very grateful I have a job which pays me well enough so I can do what I want when I not working, which is travel as much as I can (usually when I haven't blown through my time off). And when I travel, I always on the lookout for places I want to go back and see again. Utqiagvik was that for sure. I have already told multiple people this too and it's true: As soon as I got off the plane and got to my hotel, I wanted to throw my phone in the ocean and never return back home. Why? Because not only I looking for that place to return to visit in the future, I also creating a short list of places I would stay permanently as well once I have enough to make it or retire. Again, Utqiagvik is that for sure. Now, I unfortunately not in a position to retire at this time, but barring a huge windfall or something of that nature, you never know. I have other places that are just remote as well that I have already been to that are also on this list but Utqiagvik holds the top spot for now. I took a lot of photos of the town mostly in the early morning (like 1 AM early) to get a good sense of the place. It is small and beautiful. It's a purpose built place on an unforgiving land and it has everything I want: peace, quiet, and the ocean. I love the ocean more than anything and the simple fact it is always minutes away here for a short walk is just azing. Could I survive in a place like this? I don't doubt I could. Maybe one day.

Of all the nests I found last week this black brant nest was the most well constructed and contained the most feathers and down. The second photo show where most of it came from. Note the bare skin (brood patch) on the breast of the hen. I was thinking how cold it must be for her when she lands on the icy tundra ponds! #barrowalaska

There was a youth project a few years ago when a team of youth's painted wonderfully uplifting sayings on the dumpsters around town. I've collected photos of a few of the dumpsters and I'm making them into a poster for our office. alaska

A walk on the Tundra with Kismet. It’s about 9:30 pm ( I think). This is where my house is. #barrowalaska

While I still processing my last vacation and still thinking about what I really want to say (truly, I honestly without words to describe how the trip was and how beautiful it was), I'll run through a checklist of all I did: My 49th US state travelled to, Alaska ✔ Seeing the Arctic Ocean at shoreline ✔ Going to the Northernmost point in the American landmass, Point Barrow ✔ Experiencing the all day sun / daylight for Summer Solstice ✔ Experiencing the ocean by putting my feet in it ✔ Eating ice from an iceberg that was calved and pushed to shore ✔ Honestly, I have a lot more to say in another post but I will say this: I think I finally found a place that immediately (literally as soon as I landed) felt like home. This was the most peaceful and relaxed place I have ever been to in my entire life and I hope to return soon.

Orange County on the top and Barrow, Alaska on the bottom. Hard, even for me, to believe these pictures were just a few days apart. Barrow, Alaska isn’t the furthest place from Orange County but it’s a bout as far away a place as two places can be! #barrowalaska
