At , great egrets (aka great white herons or white herons) are a pretty common sight. In flight, these sizable birds tuck their long necks into their chests and appear to be somewhat compact. In actuality, a great egret can measure up to three-and-a-half feet tall! On the ground, egrets wade through marshlands and brackish waters in search of food or spend hours looking for sticks to build their nests. Each carefully-crafted domicile is perched high among the tree line to protect the nesting birds and their young from predators, like raccoons. When it comes to hunting, great egrets are a patient bunch. Standing still in shallow waters, a motionless egret might even be confused for a statute. However, as prey enters an egret’s line of vision, it strikes with startling speed and traps it’s meal with a narrow, pointed beak.
