"GAY POWER," Gay Activists Alliance members, Iwo Jima Memorial, Arlington, Virginia, January 5, 1972. Photo by John Bowden for Washington Area Spark, c/o @washingtonpost & @dcpubliclibrary. . In November 1971, D.C.’s “The Gay Blade” (now known as “The Washington Blade,” @washblade) included the following update: “Entrapment by goodlooking plainclothes Park Policemen continues in Northern Virginia. Arrests are rumored to be running at a rate of 10 per week.” . More specifically, by the end of 1971, Park Police had arrested over 60 people for “obscene and indecent” acts in a wooded area near the Iwo Jima Memorial; almost all of those detained had been entrapped by undercover officers assigned to conduct arrests. . Throughout January 1972, D.C.'s liberation community took action, engaging in some of its earliest protests against police harassment. . On January 5, 1972, 47 years ago today, for example, “members and friends of [the Gay Activists Alliance] torchlight picketed” in the area around the Iwo Jima Memorial. “After the action,” @washblade explained, “six men were arrested on charges of demonstrating without a permit.” The U.S. Attorney subsequently dropped charges against the six. . Police harassment of popular cruising areas continued for years.

As you enjoy your holiday weekend be sure to pause and remember our fallen from every field, from Bunker Hill to Baghdad. But also say a prayer of thanks for living in a nation where some stand up to preserve the liberty of all.

Up a little earlier than usual this morning to join “Good Morning Washington” at Iwo Jima Memorial to share our “Mission: Navy Life” series! Great to see @jessob_reisbeck and @autria_godfrey — and meet the United States Marine Band!

To the British and those Loyalists who had taken refuge in Boston, they were simply “the rebels,” or “the country people,” undeserving the words “American” or “army.” General John Burgoyne disdainfully them “a preposterous parade,” a “rabble in arms. -1776 A great day for a preposterous parade w my fellow rabble in arms.

LOVE WINS! Marathons are completely bonkers!!!! What a weird thing to put the through. Felt easy breezy thru 12, then had a really dark patch 16-20 (you’ll see it on @oiselle’s Insta-story soon haha) which included me telling Sally my foot was broken, us walking for 4-5 minutes while trying to choke down Advil with no fluids (me: fail, Sally: success), a water stop, and a regroup. Then we were only 2 miles from DMV Volée cowbell corner. I totally broke down when I saw those women. Love you!!! And then just had to keep going. My calves were one mega-twitch away from cramping the last 4 miles. But Sally was popping her tank and getting cheers the whole race and at that point we. were. going. to. finish. Can’t believe I did it! @oiselle_sally you are the best friend a woman could have. Love you so much! Thank you for all the cheers out there. Everyone who met my eye and cheered for me: I soaked it in and used it. This is a fantastic marathon. @marinecorpsmarathon you all did an amazing job. ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ (And you repeat marathoners: you are 🥜! )
